One of the greatest tragedies of the preservation of rock history was the eviction of the legendary New York Club CBGB. Many punk and new wave bands got their start at CBGB. Amongst them were the Ramones, Talking Heads and Blondie. The club played host to many notable bands and even served as the venue for the Police’s first American show.
Sadly, CBGB was evicted in October 2006 and has since been replaced by a store for high end men’s fashion designer John Varvatos. If that’s not a spit in the face of everything CBGB stood for, I don’t know what is.
On the bright side, one can still get the full CBGB experience in the form of a virtual tour. It is available here and starts you off inside the club’s infamous bathroom.
